You could look for but you could not find a more
energetic production of Frank Loesser’s "Guys
and Dolls" than the one playing at Curtain Call
in Stamford (weekends through November 17) Mark
it highly recommended! Once in a while it has a
few rough edges, but there are so many smooth
ones and great production numbers that you’ll
enjoy it for all three hours.
Curtain Call is one of those
anomalies known as regional theatre. That means
its professional productions are largely
presented without equity (union) actors. It
would be like any small town theatre except that
1) it’s in a big city, and 2) it has a
completely dedicated group of staff and
sponsors, and 3) it has Lou Ursone at the helm.
Ursone is a talented company manager (and a very
skilled actor too) who has encouraged Curtain
Call to go for the gold. The company runs two
theaters, both on the grounds of Sterling Farms
Golf Course in Stamford, and maintains a
schedule that never stops. "Guys and Dolls" is
the beginning of their ‘We Love New York’ series
- which will be continued next month with a
production of "Miracle on 34th
Street."
Back to "Guys and Dolls." The
story of a handsome gambler who falls in love
with a beautiful Salvation Army type lady, and
the frustrations of Nathan Delight and his
fiancée Miss Adelaide, come to life with lots of
fun. Great singing from the principals; great
direction by Gordon Casagrande, terrific sets
and lighting and costumes. You can find Curtain
Call at
www.curtaincallinc.com
Get your tickets online. Friday and Saturday
evenings, Sunday afternoon. $25 or less. And
mark this theater as one of your favorites. It’s
a good bet, consistently.
