Hi, I'm Vic Steffens.....the person with his name on all
the bills around Horizon. I've been asked to say a bit
about myself and my career. There's quite a bit to tell,
but I'll edit it heavily so as not to bore you or waste
your ISP's precious minutes.
I'm essentially a Beatles era musician....I loved music
before the Beatles, but after The Beatles I was obsessed
with it. The early years of my career were spent as a
drummer and band leader with projects such as "The
Wrongh Black Bag", "The Scratch Band", "Nightbird" and
"Napi Browne". From the start I was heavily involved in
recording, working with producers such as Bob Shad, who
discovered Janice Joplin and Ted Nugent, Andrew Loog
Oldham, who produced all of the early Rolling Stones
records, and Paul Leka, who produced Harry Chapin and
REO Speedwagon. I knew early on that I wanted to have a
studio and emulate the success of these talented people. |
|
By the early 1980's I had concentrated most of my
energies on producing, and was playing less. I produced
several records with the great Boston band "The
Neighborhoods" and an excellent Connecticut band,
"Newjohnny5", and started building a small studio at my
home in Hamden, CT. At that studio I was introduced to a
couple who owned the former home of Kiss member Ace
Frehley in Wilton, CT. I formed a company with them and
Horizon was born. Several years later the current
buildings in West Haven became available, and I moved
the company here.
In the last five years I have had the opportunity to
work with many great artists and contribute to some
excellent projects. I particularly like our blues
projects: Matt "Guitar" Murphy, Eddie King, The Blues
Brothers Horns and the late, great Jessie Austin. It was
also a honor to record jazz piano legend Ahmad Jamal at
Horizon, live in concert, and also at his home.
Gospel is also one of my loves. I have had the pleasure
of working on several great gospel records, including
the award winning East Coast Regional Mass Choir,
recently re-released on Pepperco, two Gospel Men's
Workshop of America live CDs, and J.C.White and the TFT
Choir. Yvette Pflunder. Producers like Joel Bryant and
Sanchez Harley have created CD length projects here, and
great musicians and singers like Jon DuBose, Willie
Small, and Joe Wilson have brightened the musical
landscape of Horizon.
On the rock and pop side artists like the great Sly
Stone, Ani DiFranco, SWV, Patra, Blues Saraceno, RuPaul,
and Donna Summer have used Horizon's services.
I am heavily involved in artist developement, producing
for new artists The Mighty Purple, Jonathan DuBose
(guitarist for Harry Connick), Fat Bag, Groove Fiction
Sex Ceremony, MoKijam, and countless others. Horizon
also provides a support environment for many R and B and
rap artists, most notably Shomari, who produce for Teddy
Riley's Little Man label with Interscope.
As a Producer/Engineer I am equally comfortable in the
live and midi world, and I love to mix both when
possible. I am proud of Horizon's ability to adjust to
whatever technology is required to make a project work,
and am always looking for new artists and projects. Feel
free to contact me
here if I can shed any light on how to achieve your
musical goals. |
