Dance Program
Dance in America: Seen your students dance lately? Your students will be dancing for at least half of this program. Originally a touring “hoofer,” Brian performs the only dance program of its kind, demonstrating over thirty-five dances from ballroom, roaring ‘20s, country, jazz, Latin, American Bandstand, MTV and more: waltz to watusi, charleston to cha cha and lindy hop to hip hop. Brian trains seven students to help him perform many of the partnered and group dances for this presentation. History, humor and period music accompany each selection.

Dance Workshops: (culminate with a choreographed piece based on traditional structure and student ideas)
Never Too Young to Dance and Boogie (grades K – 2): Creative movement and choreography for these small dancers provides dance appreciation for a lifetime. Students develop balance, spatial awareness, rhythm, respect for others, self-confidence and some good ol’ funky moves.

Folk Dances, 1700 – 1900 (grades 3 – 6): Spirited features of circle, line and square dances, the time-honored Grand March, the waltz and the polka, prove that Revolutionary and Civil War dances were not so square after all.

Social Dances of the 20th Century (grades 3 – 6): These dances range from elegant/formal to irreverent/outrageous. Students encounter the daring and romantic facets of ragtime, blues, jazz, country, Latin, ballroom and rock, including moonwalk and robotics. Serious fun!

Swing Dance Intensive (grades 4 – 12, adult): Older students master the jumps, kicks, spins, turns and fancy footwork that made swing America’s favorite dance, and learn how to get the most out of this symmetrical, partnered interaction.

Teacher In-Service Training: Teacher training and complete outlines and resource packets are available for all the above workshops. Feel the joy of dance, and learn dance skills and teaching methods to use effectively with students in a safe, respectful and sequential manner.

“Our students were genuinely surprised by Mr. Gillie’s dance abilities and enthusiastic about their interactive roles.” North Center School, Southington, CT.
